Count Down To Christmas – Day 2

By Kira On December 2, 2010 Under Count Down To Christmas!!, Craft

Yes, I know this is the second day posted in one day…but this will catch me up so tomorrow you will just see Day 3.

Today for our count down activity we created Snowmen refrigerator magnets. I got the idea from Kaboose.com and changed it up a bit to create a magnet.

I started by adding the salt dough ingredients to individual bowls.

* 1 Tablespoon Salt

* 2 Tablespoons Flour

*1 Tablespoon Water

Then I gave each child a bowl with Salt dough ingredients and a spoon to stir the dough up. They stirred until dough was all mixed and then we added a bit more flour just to make it the right consistency to knead with their hands. The kids kneaded the dough for a couple minutes (and played with it some :-) ). Once the dough was smooth we split it into two parts, one large and one small. The larger part we rolled into a ball, set on a cookie sheet and then the child flattened it into a circle with the palm of their hand. The smaller part was rolled into a carrot shape and then gently pressed onto the larger flattened circle.

We completed this first step in the morning so that we could bake the dough during nap time. The dough baked for 2 hours at 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

In the afternoon we painted our Snowmen! The large ball was painted white (I added some glitter additive to make it sparkle a bit). Once the white paint dried we added orange paint to the carrot nose and used the end of a paint brush to make eyes and a mouth.

To turn it into a magnet we hot glued magnet strips to the back.

This was a fun project that we all enjoyed and created a keepsake for years to come!

Check back tomorrow for another fun Christmas activity!!

Kira
